Lessons Learned #3

Follow Your Dreams

It's amazing what can happen when you make the right decision at the right time. I told them my last day would be August 5th, and immediately started hyperventilating.

The hiring manager for that position thought I was using this as a ploy to get more money or some such thing in the hiring process. My existing manager thought I was angling for a pay-raise.

My team took it as calmly as could be expected, and were even cautiously excited for me. Time after time I discussed my reasons, my epiphany, and that usually began a discussion of their dreams.

I heard more than one dream in those few weeks, and learned a lot about the people I had known for years that I didn't know before.

One co-worker dreams of being a movie producer. Another wants to help the disadvantaged. So many dreams, and suddenly it seems that people were studying their own dreams, examining how they might be possible.

If I could, they could, right?

What you dream of may not happen right now. It may not happen in a year, or five years, but live your dream. It will not happen if you stop.

  1. One things that I have learned is that some people will cheer you on when they hear of your dream, and some people will react in anger. As if, since they gave up on their dream (for whatever reason), no one else should be allowed to dream.

  2. So far everyone's been very supportive. I haven't run into any of the angry version yet, but I have run into a lot of people who wanted to tell me about their dreams.
